Carol Baker trained first as a three-dimensional designer, and then as a fine artist. She studied at Chelsea School of Art (now part of the University of the Arts, London) from 1976 to 1980, then undertook fine art training at Sir John Cass School of Art (now part of London Metropolitan University) between 1987-1991. In 2003 she also attained an MA (Land Art Images) from Sir John Cass.
Carol's work encompasses a variety of media, including oil painting on canvas and printmaking (most notably etching and silkscreen). Always attracted beyond the conventional, her works can best be described as collages, using ink, pastel, wax, and other 'mixed media' on fabric, paper and other grounds. Carol especially enjoys creating images by building up surfaces and composite images with overlays. Experimentation is an important part of her creative process.
Inspired chiefly by landscape and personal feeling, the results are usually abstract, though figurative elements can sometimes be seen. Colour is always a strong element in her work, and her sense of colour relations is a leading element in her process of composition.
As well as working in the studio, Carol works outdoors, taking inspiration from nature and the environment. She has been an enthusiastic practitioner of 'Land Art', making installations from natural materials in the landscape. When working for her MA, she added a new dimension to this, taking photographs of natural materials and manipulating these on the computer to create digital images.
